Introduction:
This extraordinary journey in Southern India offers a fantastic combination of vibrant city life and magical natural retreats as well as ancient temple towns and sleepy villages.

Kerala's varied nature and traditional way of life makes you feel truly relaxed and you will enjoy the countryside walks with clean air and tranquil surroundings.

In February, the snake goddess festival near Neeleshwar in North Kerala is a mysterious experience. This region is also home to one of the oldest and famous religious ritual dance called Theyyam, which signifies empowerment of all humans as equals.

This tour would not be complete without a relaxing traditional rice barge houseboat cruise in the backwaters and a rejuvenating Ayurveda health massage while relaxing at the fabulous golden beach on the Arabian Sea.

15 DAY OUTLINE ITINERARY (End January to mid February)

The unique vibrant city of Mumbai (Bombay) with its art, culture, Victorian Gothic architectural wonders and street life; the wild town of Madurai dedicated to the Mother Goddess and built around its stunning temple; a trip up into the hills to see plantation life and enjoy the views, country walks and clear tranquil air; the ancient international trading port of Fort Cochin with its spice warehouses, antique shops, colonial architecture and history and an extraordinary Goddess temple that specialises in tantric spirit rituals; a visit to the ancient martial arts of Kerala that gave birth to all the martial arts traditions of the far east; various dance and music performances and to finish the tour, a few idyllic days relaxing at the fabulous Neeleshwar Hermitage. Here there are many things to enjoy: Ayurvedic treatments; a traditional rice barge for a languid sunset cruise; the local Snake Goddess Festival celebrations; dramatic ritual Theyyam dance around old temples; nearby ashrams of two important teachers; trips to local markets; infinity pool and unspoilt beach stretching for miles in either direction with a sea safe to swim in.

The tour has been planned to coincide with the temple festival season, so we will encounter unexpected celebrations along the road as we travel. Our journey will be enlivened with talks on the spiritual, social and cultural aspects of the Land of Dreams by our specialist tour guides.

Day 1: Mumbai ( India )
Board your flight from your home country to Mumbai.

 
Day 2: Mumbai
After arrival in Mumbai, garland welcome, assistance and transfer to pre-booked hotel. Time to relax. After lunch enjoy a sightseeing tour including Parsi Towers of Silence, a Jain Temple and Mahatma Gandhi's House, with drive through Victoria and Churchgate. Overnight in hotel.

Day 3: Mumbai Elephanta Excursion
After breakfast we take a ferry crossing to Elephanta Island. This is one of the most celebrated rock-cut cave sanctuaries in the world, dedicated to Lord Shiva, the God of Transformation, and dating from the 8th century A.D. Back for lunch and free time to stroll around the Gateway of India with its shops and stalls, and generally relax. Overnight in hotel.

 
Day 4: Mumbai - Madurai
Today we fly to Madurai, the famed city of the Mother Goddess in Tamil Nadu, by Indian airlines (departure: 09:40am / arrival: 1:00pm). Transfer to the hotel, with a late afternoon evening visit to the atmospheric Subrahmaniyam Temple, carved out of living rock. Overnight in hotel.

Day 5: Madurai - Munnar
Half day to explore the town and the vast Meenakshi Temple, a veritable cathedral, largely built in the 17th century, but housing two much older shrines, dedicated to the mother goddess Meenakshi and her consort Sundrishvara, a form of Shiva.

Later you drive (about 5 hrs) from Madurai up to the lovely hill station of Munnar, with a chance to see the typical country life along the roadside. On arrival in Munnar check into hotel. Overnight in hotel.

 
Day 6: Munnar
A day to explore Munnar, visit a tea factory and plantations, town and spice markets. Overnight in hotel.

Day 7: Munnar - Kochi (145km / 5-6 hrs)
After an early start, we take a beautiful drive down through tea and spice plantations into the coastal strip and the old trading capital of central Kerala, Fort Cochin (Kochi). Arrive Kochi and check into hotel. The rest of the day is free to relax. Overnight in hotel.

 
Day 8: Fort Cochin
After breakfast, we enjoy gentle sightseeing of the atmospheric Fort Cochin, with its St. Francis Church, San Sebastian Cathedral, Chinese fishing nets and colonial architecture. In the early evening we visit the Chottanikkara Temple, for the extremely atmospheric evening puja performance there. Overnight in hotel.

Day 9: Kochi
In the morning we visit Mattancherry, with its Dutch Royal Palace housing some of the best early mural painting in Kerala and the old trading area of Jew town, with its spice warehouses, ancient synagogue and antique shops. After lunch, visit the Jain temples, followed by an early evening Kathakali dance performance. Overnight in hotel.

 
Day 10: Kochi - Calicut
On the way Calicut (Kozhikode) we visit the Elephant Camp at Guruvayur, where over 50 temple elephants are housed, and a traditional artist's studio near the great Krishna Temple. On arrival in Calicut check into hotel for overnight.

Day 11: Calicut - Neeleshwar (about 6 hrs)
After breakfast we will see a performance of the extraordinary Kalaripayattu, the martial art that is taken as a form of spirit possession and was a seminal influence in all the martial arts throughout the East. We continue north with lunch at Kannur. After lunch we drive to Neeleshwar and check in for teatime at our beach hotel located on the Arabian Sea and relax. Overnight in hotel.

 
Day 12: Neeleshwar
Over the next two days there will be the opportunity to engage in the wide range of activities on offer: yoga sessions, the many and varied spa treatments, consultations with local astrologers, participation in special pujas on site, cycle rides etc. There is also the chance of local sightseeing: to ashrams and temples, which are especially interesting at this time as it is the local Snake Goddess Festival as well as the Theyyam season, local villages, or you can just spend the time hanging out at leisure around the hotel and pool. Overnight in hotel.

Day 13: Neeleshwar
Enjoy a two-hour houseboat cruise in the nearby backwaters. In the evening there will be a concert of classical music under the brilliant stars, followed by our Farewell Dinner. Overnight in hotel.

 
Day 14: Neeleshwar - Mumbai
Morning is free. Later we drive to Mangalore Airport to board the afternoon flight to Mumbai. On arrival, assistance and transfer to your hotel located near to the airport and relax. Overnight in hotel.

Day 15: Mumbai - Back to your Home country.
Transfer to the International Airport to board your flight to your onward destination.
